Tratos’ Healthy Homes Project, which is lobbying for better legislation, for cables used in UK housing construction, received a boost at this week’s Conservative Party Conference as visitors and MPs pledged their support.

Earlier this year, the UK witnessed one of the most shocking failures in Building Safety at Grenfell. At the same time the country’s adoption of EU regulation in the form of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) came into effect for fire retardant cables.

The UK’s largest independent cable manufacturer, Tratos, believes that while CPR is a valuable step forward, it doesn’t go far enough. The company is calling for tougher cable legislation to deliver improved fire safety performance and help reduce the spread of fire.

Throughout the Conference, Tratos highlighted issues concerning cable safety and why the call for greater safety should not be overlooked.

Maurizio Bragagni, Tratos CEO said: “The Grenfell Tower tragedy has shocked everyone to the core. Today our Prime Minister Theresa May said that Grenfell should never have happened and should never be allowed to happen again. She said we must learn the lessons, understanding not just what went wrong but why the voices of the people of Grenfell had been ignored over so many years. We believe the public does have a voice and should be heard on this matter and that is why we have taken our campaign directly to the public.

“Our Healthy Homes Project will help raise awareness of the lack of enforcement of cable standards and we are pushing for safer homes in Britain through our petition. We have a duty as a UK cable manufacturer to ensure that the products we produce and sell are not just fit for the purpose, but the best solution for the application in which they will be used. We want a higher level of attainment for all relevant cable affected by CPR.”

Tratos is one of Europe’s largest independent cable manufacturers. The company has five manufacturing facilities in Italy and the UK, employing people around the world producing electrical, electronic and fibre optic cable solutions.
