Michael Gove will pledge free British citizenship for 3 million EU nationals after Brexit if he becomes prime minister, as well as abolishing the burden of providing proof of settled status.

He has given his backing to a campaign by the Conservative party backbencher Alberto Costa, a leading champion of EU citizens’ rights, who has spent two months canvassing opinion from leadership candidates on the issue.

Costa told the Guardian that Michael Gove had fully agreed to adopt his proposals and he would publicly announce that it was wrong to put EU citizens on the negotiation table in the first place.

The article reported that he would also go further and offer British citizenship at no cost if he becomes prime minister.

I would like to congratulate Alberto on his work, supporting EU citizens’ status at the highest level. He quit his government post over ministers’ attitude to EU nationals living in the UK.

British Italian Conservatives members have made it their business to work with within Westminster to support the case of EU citizens in Britain, and we were fortunate to have Mr Gove address a recent dinner.

If chosen as the next Tory leader, Mr Gove has said that those from the EU living in the country would require documentation only for specific purposes, rather than being required to register.
