BRITAIN ESCAPES FUTURE ON THE BACKFOOT AND BREXIT BACK IN THE RING

This week’s election was touted as ‘historic’ in the run up to Britain going to the polls.

The Conservative victory was hard won and the election campaign journey was undoubtedly difficult for voters too.

The challenges they faced in making their decisions on who to choose were not dissimilar to those in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

It’s very hard to find clarity when all around you the waters are clouded with mis-information, point-scoring and manifesto pledges that promise the earth but fall down when you look at the balance sheet.

Labour’s figures didn’t stack up. They still don’t.

Viewing corporate UK as one-way, withdrawals-only ‘Bank of Britain’ is a mistake and naive.

At the same time he talked of targeting Britain’s businesses (the UK’s employers and economy drivers) for record-level tax hikes, Mr Corbyn was promising levels of debt that would have set the country back decades.

The Labour Party manifesto celebrated 1970s thinking, an £83billion spend on ‘real change’ with business and borrowing footing the bill and a dismal return to nationalised public services. Add to that another couple of rounds of ‘will we, won’t we?’ on Brexit and a completely unrealistic plan for free broadband for every home and we were set to step back five decades.

For all its challenges in Westminster, going forward the Conservative Government is committed to getting Brexit done, investing in the NHS, extra policing and keeping taxation balanced in order to look after people and support a growing economy. If business works, then jobs work. If jobs are created and businesses flourish, then tax revenue grows. When tax revenue grows, thanks to a healthy and high-performance economy, more sustainable investment is possible.

What the Conservatives offered was realism and a sustainable way to govern — and look after people. These were promises that can be delivered because they’re properly planned and budgeted for.
