A Small Republic, a Global Lesson — On Tariffs, Trust, and Timely Luck

In a world where geopolitics often influences global trade more than principles, the recent U.S. decision to impose a new wave of tariffs offers more than just economic news — it provides a moment of quiet reflection.

Two countries affected by these tariffs stood out by being treated differently: San Marino and the United Kingdom. Both received the lowest rate — a 10% tariff — while others were hit with significantly harsher penalties. As Consul of the Republic of San Marino to the United Kingdom, I was struck not just by the policy itself but by what it symbolises.

Some may say it’s a coincidence. Others — more conspiratorial in their imagination — might say it’s because I, a republican conservative with deep interests in both countries, am somehow orchestrating favourable outcomes behind the scenes. They point to my recognition in the U.S., my role in business, and my diplomatic duties. To that, I can only offer a wry smile.

Perhaps I’m just lucky — or maybe I’ve studied history more carefully than most.
